Job Description

The Academic Success Coach is responsible for providing academic support to students by providing academic coaching in content-related courses and non-cognitive skills. Helps students develop their skill in time management, goal setting, and test preparation. Provides students with skills and strategies they may need to become self-regulated learners. In addition, as the Writing Specialist this person will offer one-to-one consultations to undergraduate and graduate students on writing assignment projects, in any stage of the writing process. The writing specialist, through various writing methods, will provide feedback on students’ writing and answer questions that students have about writing, encouraging students to become active learners in the process.

Preferred Qualifications

Master’s degree preferred in Composition, Rhetoric, Curriculum and Instruction, Technical Communication, Nursing Education, or related field. More than two years of experience working in a post-secondary institution’s advising and/or writing program. More than one to two years of experience facilitating workshops and consultations to students and faculty members. Experience working within STEM and/or Health Profession disciplines.
Experience with educational technologies.

Meet individually with nursing students to track their academic progress and support services; work with students to develop skills such as time management, critical thinking, and effective study habits. Develop an individual Success Plan for each student identified at risk. Continue meeting with students throughout the semester until the completion of their plan.

Take primary responsibility in the design, facilitation, and assessment of a coherent and responsive Nursing Writing Development program. Conduct individual and group writing consultations, in both face-to-face and online formats, to support scholarly writing ranging from the pre-writing stage, to organization and development, to finally mechanics and grammar

Develop and provide SoN success skills workshops based on student needs each semester. Plan and facilitate writing workshops to support undergraduate courses and scholarly writing seminars to support the graduate program. Market and advertise workshops to students and faculty to increase participation.

Maintain regular communication with faculty members in the School of Nursing to support or assist in designing, incorporating, and assessing course-relevant writing instruction materials and practices. Supervise writing tutors and volunteers as relevant to specific projects. Assist in hiring and conducting training sessions once a month for the Student Success Center Student Leaders, such as the Supplemental Instruction Leaders, Personal Tutors, and/or Peer Mentors.

Job Duty

Assist in preparing reports measuring the Academic Coaching Program’s effectiveness and disseminate data to SON faculty, staff, and constituents. Appropriately analyze and interpret data to influence decision-making for the future of the Academic Coaching and Writing program. Maintain database records of all consultations and all instructional support activity. Contribute to grant applications and reports for the Student Success Center as needed.
