Job Description

This position is responsible for development of processes, systems, educational programs and management of the financial operations of Clinical Trials supported by the Clinical Trials Office (CTO). The Lead uses financial expertise to negotiate with sponsors to maximize project revenue, ensure regulatory compliant clinical billing, and build research projects into the clinical trial management system (CTMS). The Lead assists with strategic leadership in this area including planning, goal setting, and monitoring organization performance to ensure cost effectiveness and high quality programs. This position is directly responsible for daily oversight and management of the VPR CTO Clinical Trial Budget Team operations and staff.

Preferred Qualifications

Specific knowledge of clinical trial management systems, clinical trial contracting and research billing compliance. Familiarity with federal regulatory requirements for the conduct of clinical research. Experience in an academic medical setting or university environment is strongly desired. Must be able to communicate and interact tactfully with the public by expressing ideas clearly and concisely and addressing audiences effectively. Ability to read and interpret professional journals, financial reports, and legal documents as necessary. Ability to write reports, procedural manuals, and prepare business correspondence. Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions. Ability to interpret an extensive variety of technical instructions and manage several abstract and concrete variables. Knowledge of training concepts and principles. Knowledge of computer and information systems. Ability to demonstrate expertise in a hands-on manner, able to demonstrate the value-added of their work. Ability to lead by example.

This position is directly responsible for daily oversight and management of the VPR CTO Clinical Trial Budget Team operations and staff. The development of processes, systems, educational programs and management of the financial operations of Clinical Trials supported by the Clinical Trials Office (CTO). Responsible for additional professional development of subordinate staff, promoting education and cross-training in order to maximize staffing potential. Responsible for policy/procedure development related to Clinical Trial Financial Management.

Negotiates research study budgets with industry sponsors to ensure adequate study funding. Provides financial and administrative support for clinical research projects regardless of funding source. Ensures integration of institutional and regulatory compliance in project development. Oversees all other budget team member contributions in project development, including review of work product and assurance that all deadlines are met.

Responsible for review of study documentation (protocol, informed consent, contract and budget) to eliminate disagreements in financial language; and confirm that all study-related expenses are identified and included in a projects estimated cost.

Assists in policy/procedure development related to Clinical Trial Financial Management. Identifies changing areas of clinical trial risk and revises policies as needed to address and mitigate those risks. Ensure HSC clinical trial programs have high quality and integrity in compliance with Federal, State and University guidelines. Assists in identifying appropriate internal controls; provides mechanisms to evaluate the effectiveness of the HSC’s program.
