Job Description

The Peer Support Specialist contributes to facilitating recovery by acting as a role model to peers, exhibiting competency in personal recovery and serving as a consumer advocate. Shares personal recovery experiences to help consumers identify the skills, supports and resources to enhance wellness, inspire hope and develop self-help skills. Through peer-to-peer relationship building, this position will educate consumers about the services that might be available and assist consumers in developing practical knowledge on accessing community support networks and resources. This position will support the mission recovery oriented mission of the Department of Psychiatry’s Transitional Care Clinic and the spirit of the PCORI grant which emphasizes patient engagement in mental health care.

Job Duty

Provides guidance in developing skills of self-advocacy and self-determination. Provides one-to-one support in wellness planning. Attends team meetings to promote consumer’s use of self-directed recovery tools. Models and educates about the recovery to staff and consumers. Encourages people to access and connect to natural supports. Participate in patient shared-decision making sessions. Will also co-facilitate consumer groups.

Job Duty

Participates as a research team member on IRB approved research protocols examining patient care experiences and preferences. Duties to include conducting patient focus groups, analyzing data, and manuscript preparation.

Collaborate with investigators and national experts on dissemination plan. Contribute to the training of doctoral level psychology interns.
