High school education or equivalent. Meet and maintain the minimum requirements for JCAHPO certification as a Certified Ophthalmic Assistant (COA). Experience in the field of ophthalmology required.

Job Description

Provides assistance to Ophthalmologists and Optometrists by performing a variety of basic technical procedures and administers treatments as directed by the Ophthalmologists and Optometrists. Performs routine and standardized tasks such as preparing patients for examinations,screening patients, assisting the ophthalmologists during the examination.
SALARY COMMENSURATE WITH CERTIFICATION STATUS AND EXPERIENCE.

Job Duties

Job Duty

Assists the Ophthalmologist in the treatment and care of patients. Proficient in adult and pediatric Ophthalmic care. Tests (measures and records) basic ocular function, to include: visual acuity, ocular motility, color vision testing, visual field exams, lensometry, tonometry, refractions, Amsler grid, worth 4 dot, and evaluation of pupils.
Performs efficient, accurate, and legible patient workups to include patient interviews, obtaining and documenting medical history, medication history, chief complaint, obtaining health care information maintenance, etc. Administers eye and oral medications as directed by the ophthalmologist. Understands, communicates, and follows rules regarding patient consent for procedures.

Performs a variety of other procedures and techniques such as axial length and IOL calculation, measurement of refractive error (retinoscopy), and external photography, measurement and placement of prisms, etc.

Reports missing or unserviceable equipment to lead technician. Maintains appearance and stocking of supplies and forms in exam rooms. Maintains ophthalmic instruments by cleaning exposed lenses, mirrors and prisms and replacing burned out bulbs.

Assists ophthalmologist with surgical procedures. Sterilizes surgical instruments. Changes dressings and instructs patients and/or parents in home care.
