Job Description

The Department of Neurosurgery, Division of Neurocritical Care at UT Health San Antonio is seeking qualified mid-level provider (NP/PA) to join a dynamic team of neurointensivists in a growing neuroscience ICU. We are currently expanding our coverage to 18 beds, with eventual expansion to 26. We are supporting the addition of a position to allow for 24/7 coverage. Qualified candidates should have at least 1 year of critical care experience as a mid-level provider with additional neurocritical care experience as well.

Our team is composed of fellowship-trained neurointensivists, mid-level providers and residents from neurology, neurosurgery, emergency medicine and anesthesia. We also have a dedicated neuropharmacist, 24-hour EEG support, portable CT scanner and outstanding ancillary staff and strong department and hospital support. Neurocritical care is the primary service for patients in our unit and we also provide consultative services for patients throughout the hospital. We work closely with neurosurgery, neurology, trauma and medicine.

Preferred Qualifications

State licensure as an RN from a Nurse-Practitioners Program (ACNP or FNP with appropriate ICU
privileges) or Master’s degree in Nursing or Physician Assistant program with certification

Experience and competency in an ICU setting

ENLS and ACLS Certified

Combination of Relevant Education and Experience accepted No

Job Duties

Job Duty

Responsible for ensuring continuity of care between patients/family, referring physicians and neurosurgery and neurocritical care team as well as consulting teams.
a. Admission and evaluation of patients in the ICU
b. Evaluation of neurocritical care consults outside of the ICU

Coordinate with UHS discharge planners and social work services to facilitate efficient discharges and transfers.
a. Participate in daily huddles with ICU care team
b. Formulate discharge summaries and address needed paperwork when patient ready for transfer out of the ICU

Provide patient/family education.
a. Updating patients and families daily on plans of care
b. Providing education on specific patient conditions for patient and family when indicated

Provide guidance for interns and medical students.
a. Instruction of procedures described above
b. Guidance with order writing and patient care protocols/pathways

Provide inpatient care as part of a coordinated care team.
a. Perform procedures including central line placement, arterial line placement, suture removal, drain removal, lumbar puncture and local wound care once competence in procedures has been demonstrated
b. Write orders, arrange indicated studies.
c. Manage ventilator, EVD, ICP monitors, Licox, lumbar drains, chest tubes
d. Follow-up and evaluate study results and implement appropriate treatment in collaboration with ICU
e. Engage consultants as necessary for comprehensive care of patient.
