Job Description

To provide patient care in a hospital and/or clinic/clinical setting under the supervision of a neurosurgeon.

Job Duties

Job Duty

Assists a Specialist Physician in the diagnostic and therapeutic management of patients by performing a variety of medical or surgical tasks. Obtains complete medical history from patients, performs physical exams, organizes and presents physical data, together with evaluation and recommendations, to allow the Physician to visualize the problem and determine appropriate diagnostic procedures. Supervising Physician will countersign on all admitting histories and physical exams.

Job Duty

Assess routine neurological consultations and inform attending physician of findings. Provide routine neurosurgical care for neurosurgical outpatients, inpatients, and post-ops. Provide education and counseling of patients and families in preventative care, medical conditions, and the use of prescribed treatments and drugs.

Job Duty

Makes daily rounds to observe and record each patient’s medical progress, updating and summarizing medical records, changing orders when appropriate, and notifying the responsible physician of significant changes in the patient’s condition. Produces discharge summaries and notes on procedures performed for which the advanced practice provider is responsible.

As appropriate for scope of practice and experience, perform ventriculostomies, place lumbar subarachnoid drains, place ICP monitors, set up and adjust cervical traction, act as first or second surgical assistant.
