Job Description

The Ophthalmology department administrator is responsible for the financial and administrative activities of the department under the authority of the Department Chair and the Vice Dean for Finance. These activities include, but are not limited to: budget development, managing and monitoring expenses and revenues in clinical and research operations; management of short and long term operations such as space, information technology, and inventory; oversight of research, education, revenue cycle operations and human resource activities.

Preferred Qualifications

Knowledge of financial analysis and accounting principles and possess budgetary, analytical and forecasting skills. Familiarity with medical school curriculum and faculty credentials, and knowledge of conflict resolution techniques. Must have the ability to maintain confidentiality. Ability to read and interpret professional journals, financial reports, and legal documents as necessary, write reports, business correspondence, and procedural manuals. Ability to define problems, collects data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions. Knowledge of Federal, State and higher education accounting and reporting requirements and standards. Knowledge of computer systems, software applications, and automated financial systems. Must possess excellent oral and written communication skills and be able to apply organizational, interpersonal, and leadership skills.

Job Duty

Develops, communicates and manages productivity standards, goals and expectations for departmental staff in conjunction with the Department Chair. Works collaboratively with the Clinic Medical Director to assess productivity and efficiency of the clinic for the purpose of ensuing performance and achievement of goals (i.e. clinical workflow, patient throughput, physician productivity, etc.)

Manages and maintains all-funds budgeting for the department, including financial planning efforts with an emphasis on the various missions. Coordinate the compilation of and prepare operational and financial reports and analyses setting forth progress, adverse trends and appropriate recommendations or conclusions.

Maintain liaison with all levels of administration, faculty and outside organizations to coordinate departmental business, accomplish directives, negotiate contracts and facilitate the resolution of problems. Strong interpersonal skills, to include the ability to build collegial relationships to support the mission of the department both internally and externally.

Supervises a staff of exempt and non-exempt employees and recruit and train new employees; sets and adjusts rates of pay and hours of work as well as plans and directs work. Manages complaints and grievances and disciplines when necessary. Manages employee development and retention by effectively leading, motivating, and mentoring departmental/clinical personnel. Provide administrative direction and coordination in the formulation, interpretation and administration of current and long range policies, procedures and programs.
